Fun Card Game Guide: Texas Hold’ Em

Fun Card Game Guide: Texas Hold’ Em

If you’re bored and you’ve got all your friends with you, you should have a game of Texas Hold’em. Texas Hold’em is a variation of poker which is used in many casinos. In this guide, I will explain the basics of poker first, before explaining the changes that will spice up the game.

In Poker, the objective of the game is to get special sets within your hand of 5 cards. These sets are made up of the following (from best to worst).

  1. Royal Flush – A K Q J 10 – of all the same suit – best hand possible
  2. Straight flush – 7 6 5 4 3  (5 consecutive cards) of all the same suit
  3. Four of a kind – A A A A 8 – four of the same card value
  4. Full house – 7 7 7 9 9 – three of a kind plus a pair
  5. Flush – 2 8 9 10 K – all the same suit
  6. Straight – 6 7 8 9 10 – 5 consecutive values
  7. Three of a kind – 3 3 3 9 K – three cards of the same card value
  8. Two pairs – 2 2 Q Q A – two pairs or different value
  9. Pair – 5 5 8 3 2 – a pair
  10. High card – 2 5 8 9 K – Nothing! High card ranks best.

These are the ranks of hands you can have in poker. In Texas-Hold’Em poker, you get dealt two cards at the start. These are called your hole cards. A round of betting occurs. You can either fold if a bet has been made, check if no bets have been made and you do not wish to bet, bet if no-one so far has made a bet, call a bet if someone else has made a bet, or raise a bet.

After the first round of betting, three cards are dealt into the middle of the poker table. This group of cards is called the flop. This is followed by a round of betting (as shown above). Then another card joins the cards as a community card. This card is called the turn. This is followed by another round of betting. Then finally, the fifth and final community card is dealt out. This is called the river and is followed by a final round of betting.

The person ho has the best hand wins. to create the five-card hand, you need to use your two cards and combine them with the community cards to create the best hand possible. For example, if you had 3 8 and the community cards were 2 7 9 3 A, the best hand for you would be 3 3 A 9 8. This hand is ranked as a pair.

Sometimes if you bet in a round, everyone will fold and you will be the only remaining person left in that hand. If this  happens, you automatically win that hand. The other people on the table will also not get to see your hand. This keeps them guessing to your strategy.

One common strategy is bluffing. You pretend that you  have a really good hand and bet high. Your hope is for everyone to fold. This means that you will still win the pot of bets with an extremely bad hand. Semi-bluffing is also possible – this is half-bluffing. This means that you will have a pretty good hand – you might be hoping for something to come on the turn or the river. There is still a possibility though if someone calls your semi-bluff, you can still win by hoping for something to come on the turn or river.
